Introducing: Derby City Darling

www.derbycitydarling.com

Hello friends!  I am so excited to announce Derby City Darling, my brand new website designed by the one and only Chelcey.  She and I have been talking for a few weeks now about rebranding my blog given my shift in focus to fashion and beauty.  When I started Time and Turquoise, I had no idea that I would be at the place I am now.  It was something I just wanted to do for fun as a creative outlet.  While that definitely still holds true, and Time and Turquoise will always have a special place in my heart, I couldn't be more thrilled for this new adventure.  You can look forward to more style and beauty posts, with daily life sprinkled in here and there.  I hope you'll join me over at www.derbycitydarling.com and continue on this beautiful ride.

Spring Dreams

It's hard to believe that when Chelcey and I went out to take these photos just a couple weeks ago, temperatures were in the mid 60s and I had a glimmer of hope that we might actually get through this winter without a big snow storm.  Needless to say, I was wrong and Mother Nature had other plans.  Even though I've been living in my duck boots for the last week or so, I wanted to share this fun spring outfit!  This gingham button-down is pure perfection and you best believe I will be layering it under all of my favorite sweaters this season.  And these rain boots were a Christmas gift that I have been itching to wear and I absolutely love them.  They hit mid-calf, so if you have problems with boots fitting properly I highly recommend them!  I can already tell that pattern mixing will be my go-to spring look.  Given the current state of things outside - snow everywhere - this shoot seems like something straight out of an episode of Glee, a la Singing in the Rain and me dancing down the sidewalk with my polka dot umbrella.  Queue the fake rain sprinklers now.  Here's to hoping this snow melts pronto and I can rock some colorful spring looks again!

Black & Red

I love the combination of black and red, not only because that just so happens to be my favorite team's colors but also because it's so effortlessly chic.  This amazing coat was a gift from my parents for Christmas and it has been a winter staple for me ever since.  The length is perfect for dresses and jeans alike and there's plenty of room for layers underneath.  It also has a hood, which is something I really wanted for those mornings when Elsa decides to unleash her furry it's snowing.  Boxy coats don't really work for my body shape, so the fact that I can define my waist with the belt is perfect.  As far as the shoes, I've had these heels for a couple years now and just recently rediscovered them for Wear Red Day.  I love them because the heel isn't outrageously high so I can comfortably wear them all day, and the Mary Jane strap adds a retro flair.  Since the 12 inches or so of snow that we got this week won't be melting anytime soon, I can safely say that this coat won't be getting packed away anytime soon.

Oh Hey, Snow Day!

If you're in the path of the Snowpocalypse that is currently dumping a foot of the fluffy white stuff all over the city, then chances are you may have a snow day today.  This one came kind of as a surprise for me, since the talk of snow only hit the airwaves yesterday.  Normally around here, it's a huge buildup of anticipation for what could be, and then sheer disappointment.  Actually, disappointment may be the wrong word since snow days for me are far and few between since college.  Read - never.  That means I'm usually out there on the roads, getting to the office as usual.  But today, today will be a lazy day of epic proportions, complete with the following snow day activities.

1. PJs all day.
2. Leftover sprinkles donuts.
3. Catching up on the backlog of shows on my DVR.
4. Friends marathon on Netflix.
5. Sipping hot tea.
6. A mid-afternoon nap.
7. Watching the snow fall outside of my window while curled up with a blanket.
8. No makeup.
9. Reading my favorite blogs.
10. Wishing for spring!

PS - no sledding for me.  I am perfectly content in my warm apartment.  If you do have to get out on the roads today, stay safe and warm!

What are your favorite snow day activities?

Five Lipsticks for Valentine's Day

Lately I've been all about that lipstick life, the brighter the better.  It's funny because even just a year ago, I'd be hiding behind a safe MLBB shade.  While there's nothing wrong with that and I still rock a good nudey-pink some days, it's even more fun to try out pretty shades of red, pink and purple.  The key is to have the confidence to do so, and make sure you keep a good balance with the rest of your makeup.  In the spirit of love month, I wanted to share five of my favorite fun shades that have been on constant rotation in my makeup bag lately.

1. Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick - Melted Fuschia
I admit I was a little hesitant to try this one because it's really bright.  Like, really bright.  But it's also very flattering, especially if you have a paler complexion like I do, because it's a blue-based hot pink.  The tube packaging is pretty much fool proof, and I don't even need liner to get a crisp line.  Try this one with full lashes and filled in brows and you're good to go.

2. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick - Outlaw
I can't say enough good things about this lipstick.  The color is just bright enough while maintaining that true red tone, and it definitely stays in place through meals and anything else the day might throw at you.  I like to use a bright red lip liner with this to really make it pop.  Plus, it pairs perfectly with a flirty cat eye.  You can't go wrong with a cat eye.

3. Tarte Power Pigment - Flush
This one is more of a berry pink, and it definitely stands out.  You have to reapply throughout the day to maintain the moisture, but it does leave a pretty stain as it wears and the pencil makes it easy.  If you're a fan of bolder pinks, this is calling your name.  And because it's not so bright, I like to rock a neutral eye look when I wear this lippie.

4. Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick - Icon
If you're feeling brave, I highly recommend this liquid lipstick.  It's the boldest of bolds when it comes to red, and incredibly dark and pigmented.  This stuff won't go anywhere all day.  Seriously, it looked just as good after 8 hours of wear as though I had just applied it.  It can run a little vampy because it's so dark, but a nice smokey eye would also play that up.

5. Makeup Forever Rouge Artist Natural - No9 Copper Pink
Now I know everyone isn't as daring as me when it comes to makeup choices, so I definitely wanted to include a lipstick that was a bit more wearable for everyday.  The best part is, if you're a Sephora Beauty Insider you probably already have this since it was part of the birthday gift last year!  I'll wait while you go run and dig it out from the bottom of your drawer.  Got it?  Good.  Yes, this is pretty amazing for those days when I want a colorful lip but I don't want to draw so much attention and play up my eyes instead.  If you haven't already, try it on.  You won't be disappointed.

What are your favorite fun lipsticks for Valentine's day?

Midi & Mint {Galentine's Day}

Today I've teamed up with the one and only Chelcey to bring you two different looks for your Valentine's and Galentine's Day enjoyment!  This midi skirt is definitely my new favorite thing in my closet right now, and it's perfect for a fun night out with the girls.  Nothing will ever be more flattering than this kind of cut for me, so I am looking forward to pairing it with many different tops to create different outfits.  The brightness of the red with the mint is also going to be my new favorite color combo, I can already tell.  Like I've been saying, I'm trying to shake it up a bit with print mixing and the unexpected, so this is right up that same alley.  I picked up a couple new statement necklaces recently as well, so they will be on heavy rotation this spring!  PS - peep the new hair color and more importantly, lack of roots.

Head over to Chelcey's blog for her fun and flirty date night look, perfect for Valentine's Day with your sweetheart!

Wardrobe Updates & Wish List

It felt really good to take a big bag full of clothes and accessories to sell to a local consignment shop and get them out of my closet recently.  Getting some cash that surprisingly didn't burn a hole in my pocket right away wasn't half bad either.  I was 99.9% successful in my January no-buy month, the .01% coming on the 31st when a coupon was expiring.  I know, I know.  But that Too Faced Semi Sweet Chocolate palette was calling my name!  Maybe if I just don't check my mail or email for coupons, this wouldn't be a problem.  I'm actually pretty good about not letting those get the best of me, but this week that hasn't been the case.

With spring oh so close but still oh so far, I'm ready to start incorporating brighter and lighter pieces into my wardrobe, weather permitting of course.  We're supposed to hit mid-50s this weekend (hands in the air) but then I'm sure we will get back to the cold next week.  I plan on making another sweep of my closet and pulling even more things that I just don't wear anymore so that I can make room for some fresh, new pieces.  I've been stalking the sale sections of my favorite stores and biting the bullet when they finally do a sale on sale.  Those are the best.  Hello Loft pants and sweater for 70% off.  That's my kind of shopping.  I think living on my own and truly being responsible for all of my own expenses has really opened my eyes to how much clothes cost.  Plus who doesn't get a rush of excitement when they see how much they saved on their receipt?  It's the thrill of the chase, I suppose.

In my fair isle obsession post, I talked about how my style was evolving.  I'm finding myself lusting after pieces that I would have never given a second look toward before.  Case in point, patterns like fair isle and gingham, trouser and flare legged jeans, and midi skirts.  I'm starting to take control of my own style, and not let myself be defined by what I think I should be wearing.  I guess you could say I've gained the confidence to wear what I want to wear and not worry about what people think.  The same holds true for makeup.  A couple years ago I would have never worn a bright lip to work, but now it's pretty much the norm.

These are just a few things that I am excited to incorporate into my wardrobe!

1. Flare Jeans - I remember in high school, around my sophomore year or so, when I was introduced to the world of skinny jeans.  After that I swore off flares forever, but recently I've seen some of my favorite bloggers rocking them something fierce.  I think that a good pair of dark wash flares is perfectly sophisticated for the office or a casual weekend out and about.  I read a comment somewhere that said "let your ankles breathe" and I couldn't agree more!

2. Gingham - Who is this girl liking all of these new patterns and prints?  Me, that's who.  This gingham button down is perfect for spring on it's own, but what I'm really excited about is using it to mix and layer with different prints and textures.  I have found that one of the easiest way to take an outfit from boring to fabulous is by simply adding a layer with mixed prints.

3. Midi Skirt - I've always been a skirt type of gal, especially high-waisted skirts that hit at your narrowest part.  They're super flattering and so effortless to pull off by pairing it with a cute top tucked in.  I've got my eye on a few floral numbers, but if I had to choose one I would go with a solid color to get more versatility out of it.

4. Fitted Sweater - I am always drawn to slouchy, flowy, and over-sized tops which I think is fine, but given my new obsession with layering I have found that this really works better with more fitted tops.  It's a little more polished and put together too, since it helps define your body shape.  Plus they'll look great with midi skirts and flare jeans that I'm looking to incorporate into my wardrobe.

5. Leopard Heels - With a closet full of heels you would think I would wear them more, but I always fall back on my flats.  They're just so darn comfortable and easy to throw on!  I just rediscovered how much I love a particular pair of red heels that I already own, and it got me thinking why I haven't brought them out more.  I think a good pair of leopard heels would be the perfect addition, because after all, leopard is basically a neutral.

What's on your wardrobe wish list?
